How to Save Word File As PDF in Windows 10

With Windows 10’s built-in PDF (Printable Document Format) support, saving or printing any Word Document as a PDF File has never been more straightforward.

Once you use Print to PDF in Microsoft Word, the resulting PDF document is stripped of all Metadata (Links, Bookmarks, etc.). Instead, it contains only information that is available on a printed document.

Moreover, once you Save As PDF, the resulting document will include all of the Metadata associated with the document, allowing people to click on links and follow Bookmarks.

Whether you save as PDF or Print to PDF, the resulting document retains its Fonts, Formatting, & Pagination across all devices.

How to Print to PDF in Word

To use, follow the steps outlined below. Then, in Microsoft Word, print to PDF.

1. Open the Word document or file you want to convert to PDF.

2. Once in the Word document, open the File menu by clicking on the File tab in the top menu bar.

3. In the left pane, select Print from the drop-down menu. Next, check that the PDF Printer is enabled in the right-pane and adjust the Orientation, Size, Margins, and so on as needed.

Note: If Microsoft Print to PDF isn’t available, you must prepare the PDF Printer using the steps outlined in the following section.

4. After that, scroll up and click on the Print box.

5. On the next screen, enter a name for your print file, select the location where you want to save the file, and then click the Save button.

Before clicking the Save button, make sure that “Save as type” is set to .pdf.

Once you’ve saved the File to your computer, you’ll be able to print it or share it electronically with anyone.

As previously stated, the document generated by Microsoft Word’s Print to PDF feature will not contain any Links or other Metadata linked with the original Word Document.

What If Microsoft Print to PDF isn’t Available

If you previously printed to a physical printer, Microsoft PDF Printer may not be available when you print to pdf in Microsoft Word.

In this case, you must first make the Microsoft PDF Printer available and ready before printing to PDF.

If this option is not available, click on the currently available printer and select Microsoft Print to PDF from the menu that appears.

After that, click on the Print box, as shown in step 3 above.

Save As PDF in Microsoft Word

Another option for converting Word documents to PDF format is to use Microsoft Word’s Save As PDF feature.

As previously stated, the resulting saved PDF document will contain nearly all of the information found in the original document.

1. Open the Word document or file you want to convert to PDF.

2. Once in the Word document, open the File menu by clicking on the File tab in the top menu bar.

3. Select Save As in the left pane and Browse in the right pane from the drop-down menu.

4. Now, on the next screen, use the default name or type a Name for your PDF File > choose a Save Location for the PDF file and click the Save button.

It will save the Microsoft Word Document as a PDF file, which you can then publish online, or share with others.
